Group of eight similar major genetic diseases (I-VIII, with at least five subtypes), characterized by defective metabolism of mucopolysaccharides, each due to a mutant enzyme. Types III-VI include Sanfilippo syndrome (III), Morquio syndrome (IV), Scheie’s syndrome (V), and Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome (VI).
