Process of preservation of bodies of the dead, resulting in a mummy. Mummification may occur by chance (e.g. freeze-drying as in the European Iceman or the desiccated mummies of the Chilean coast; cryomummification) or intentionally (such as the mummies of ancient Egypt and many other cultures). Intentional mummification is a practice intended to enhance preservation of a body.
