Contractile tissue; as it shortens and thickens it produces a pull on an attached structure, thereby producing movement. Muscle cells are referred to as muscle fibers; muscle tissue and supporting connective and nervous tissue constitute a muscle organ. There are three types of muscle tissue, cardiac, skeletal, and smooth muscle.
