State of malnutrition caused by a reversible deficiency (avitaminosis) of vitamin A. The symptoms include poor growth, inability to adapt to dim light, keratinization of the skin, compromise of the reproductive and immune system, and eventual eye atrophy (xerophthalmia) and blindness. The primary cause is a deficiency of vitamin A, which interferes with the production of rhodopsin. Aka nyctalopia.
