Female gametogenesis; the formation, development, growth and maturation of a female gamete (ovum); takes place in the gonad (ovary). Female mammals differ from males in that premeiotic phenomena take place in the female fetus during the late first trimester of gestation, whereas in males these events are postponed until puberty.
