Class of poplypeptides coded for by genes on the X chromosome (red and green) or on chromosome 7 (blue). Opsins bind to visual pigments (retinene) in cone cells in the retina; the conjugated molecule (rhodopsin) is sensitive to light of a given wavelength, and the absence of a particular opsin results in color blindness in that wavelength range.
