Pair Bond

Behavioral association between a male and a female that form a transient consortship, as opposed to a mating pair that end their relationship following copulation. The relationship may be of short duration, lasting only until the end of the breeding season, or it may last a lifetime. In animals, pair bonding often facilitates the cooperative rearing of offspring.

See monogamy.

Cf. pairmates.
