Protection Hypothesis

1. proposal that clothing originated as a means of protection from animals and the elements.

2. proposal to explain why male cercopithecines grab an infant during a fight, in this case to protect the infant by removing it from danger. There are two possible reasons for the male’s behavior: the infant may be his offspring or other relative and he is protecting his genetic investment, or he may be attempting to show the female that he is protective of her offspring and would make a good mate.
