Segment of DNA that resembles a functional gene but that carries one or more mutations that render it functionless. Pseudogenes are thought to originate as tandem repeats that, because of their redundancy, accumulate mutations that are not selected against; they evolve 5-10 times faster than their functional counterparts and some researchers target these sequences as ideal candidates for molecular clocks.
