Range Of Motion

Type(s) of movement that a synovial joint allows; these may be nonaxial motion (slipping movements only), uniaxial motion (movement in one plane), biaxial motion (movement in two planes), or multiaxial motion (movement in or around all three planes of space and axes). ROM is dependent on such factors as structure and articular surfaces of bones, action of muscles, and strength and tautness of ligaments, tendons, and the articular capsule. ROM varies not only between joints, but between different individuals at the same joints.
