Referring to a genetic allele, the expression of which is suppressed when it occurs in combination with a dominant allele. Recessive alleles are expressed phenotypically only in the homozygous condition; thus a trait that is unexpressed in the F1 generation of a monohybrid cross may be reexpressed in some members of the F2 generation.
