Recombinant DNA Technology

Hybrid DNA produced in a test tube by joining segments of DNA from natural or synthetic sources; these segments can then be inserted into the genetic material of an organism to introduce a novel function. In biotech applications, individual human genes are often isolated and combined with a vector or DNA transporter such as a plasmid, and this recombinant plasmid is inserted into host cells so that it can be cloned.
