Reductionism

1. any general attempt to explain one range of phenomena in terms of the operations of another range of phenomena, allegedly leaving no room for causal interactions between them, e.g. cultural reduction and biological reduction.

2. philosophy that complex systems behave according to principles that can be reduced without residue to the laws of the physical sciences, and thence to its smallest components.
