Respiration

1. the act of ventilation (inhalation or breathing in and exhalation or breathing out) and gas exchange (principally oxygen and carbon dioxide) across the respiratory membrane of the lungs; external respiration.

2. gas exchange between the blood and the cells of the body; internal respiration.

3. use of cellular oxygen in the degradation of food molecules into energy; cellular respiration.
