Shoulder blade; one of a pair of large flat bones (scapulae) that are on either side of the back of the thoracic cage in hominoids, rather than laterally placed as in quadrupedal primates. The scapula articulates with the clavicle, which connects the upper limb to the axial skeleton. It also articulates with the humerus and forms a freely movable joint held together principally by musculature.
