Technology that permitted hominids to cross bodies of water that were barriers to earlier species; currently (2003) there is little evidence that species antedating AMHs had access to such technology, which first appears unequivocally about 55-50 kya, as early populations entered Australia and Papua New Guinea, probably utilizing bamboo rafts.
