Secondary (metabolic) Compound

Substance produced that is not necessary for the normal metabolic activities of an organism; for example, plant toxins serve to protect a plant, but are not absolutely necessary for the functioning of the organism, and deter other organisms from consuming them. This term usually refers to plant allochemicals as it is used by primatologists and human biologists.
