Seriation

1. temporal ordering of artifacts based on the assumption that cultural styles change (fads) and that the popularity of a style or motif can thus be associated with a certain time frame.

2. Piagetian term for the cognitive ability to arrange objects in a sequence. Demonstrated, for example, in rhesus monkeys.

3. the ordering of a set of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) such that similar OTUs are adjacent.
