Sign Stimulus

Key stimulus that elicits an immediate response from an animal even though it consists of a very small quantity of the total sensory input the animal is receiving. In a social context this stimulus may be scent, vocalization, or visual cues, and helps an animal to distinguish objects such as enemies, potential mates, and suitable nesting places.
