Sister Chromatid Cohesion Protein

Molecule that holds sister chromatids together during the metaphase and anaphase stages of meiosis I. The protein is inactivated during meiosis II so that sister chromatids can separate normally at anaphase. Mutations in this protein can result in premature separation of sister chromatids and result in malsegregation aneuploidy. A candidate gene maps to HSA 14q11.2 (8rech or Rec8p), a phosphoprotein of the rad21p family. Aka velcro protein.
