Somatic Mutation Hypothesis Or Theory

Proposal that cancer is caused by one or more mutations in body cells; the mutations may be either chromosomal, or in an updated version of the hypothesis, in DNA. Originally suggested in 1914 by German zoologist Theodor Boveri (1862-1915), the theory has enjoyed widespread support with specific additions and modifications.
