Subclass of lipids; any molecule consisting of four interconnected carbon rings to which polar groups may be attached. Examples of steroids include the adrenocortical hormones, gonadal hormones (estrogens and androgens), digitalis, vitamin D, and bile acids. Certain carcinogens (carcinogenic hydrocarbons) are also steroids or steroid mimics.
