Superoxide Dismutase

Antioxidant enzyme found in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Mammals have one form coded for by a nuclear gene (SOD1, which maps to HSA 21q22.1) and another mitochondrial form (SOD2). SODs are anti-oxidant enzymes that convert cellular superoxide anions (free radicals) to nontoxic chemicals by conversion to hydrogen peroxide and water. Aka indolophenoloxidase.

See amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
