Vernacular label for an individual believed to be the result of a single act of miscegenation and that resembles the minority variety that formed an original hybrid in a much earlier generation. Geneticists have found little evidence for this supposed phenomenon, and often ascribe it to a sanctioning system in which miscegenation is discouraged.

Cf. atavism and segregation.
