Three-word scientific designation of a subspecies, consisting of the genus and species names plus the subspecies epithet. For example, the trinomen of the savannah chimpanzee is Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii; of modern humans, Homo sapiens sapiens. The need for trinomial nomenclature first arose among ornithologists in 1844.
