Vanishing Twin Phenomenon

Controversial hypothesis that as many as 12% of all conceptions may have originated as identical twin pregnancies, but that competition for maternal resources resulted in resorption of one of the two fetuses. The hypothesis arose in an attempt to explain left-handedness as a relict of mirror-image twins, and from the clinical manifestation of embedded twins. Aka vanishing twin syndrome.
