Vicariance

Any event that results in the geographic isolation of allopatric populations that were once sympatric; vicariance events include the separation of continents during drift, the formation of mountain ranges, volcanic action, the change in the course of a river, the rise of sea level to form islands of a formerly hilly peninsula, etc.
